Can I reuse potting soil?
The short answer
You can sometimes reuse potting mix from healthy containers if it still drains and holds structure. Do not reuse old mix for seed-starting, and do not expect fertilizer to restore media whose physical structure has broken down.
Used potting mix is not automatically waste, but reuse depends on plant health, remaining structure and what you plan to grow next. Seed-starting is a stricter sanitation context.
Match the pattern before acting
Healthy previous container
- No meaningful disease history and mix still has structure
Reuse selectively, removing old roots and adjusting fertility separately.
Mix is physically degraded
- Fine collapsed texture, poor drainage or compaction
Replace rather than trying to repair structure with fertilizer.
Seed-starting
- Young seedlings need a clean, controlled medium
Use fresh seed-starting medium.
How to confirm what is happening
- Review whether the previous plant had a meaningful disease or root problem.
- Check whether the medium still drains and has open structure rather than a fine collapsed texture.
- Identify whether the next use is seed-starting, where fresh clean medium is the safer default.
