How Often Should I Water My Plants?
Watering is not one universal calendar rule. A tomato in a container, a rose in the ground, a houseplant indoors, and a lawn can all need different checks before the next watering. Start with the root zone and current conditions, then choose the plant-specific guide that matches what you are growing.

The core rule
Use conditions, not a fixed calendar.
Use the plant and root zone as the schedule. Check moisture below the surface, recent weather, drainage, container size, plant stage, and how quickly the root zone is drying before repeating a fixed interval.
Check before watering
- Root-zone moisture below the surface rather than surface appearance alone
- Plant type, growth stage, container size, and root volume
- Recent rain, heat, wind, indoor heating, or seasonal changes
- Drainage and whether water is soaking in, running through, or staying saturated
- Whether the plant is actively growing, flowering, fruiting, dormant, or newly established
